FOMCA wants local councils to promote biodegradable bags

Fomca wants local councils to promote biodegradable bags

2010/03/28
KUCHING: The Federation of Malaysian Consumer Associations (Fomca) has proposed that the local councils take the lead in reducing the daily usage of plastic bags by distributing biodegradable bags either free or pay-per-use.

Fomca chief executive offficer (CEO) Mohamad Yusof Abdul Rahman said it was high time for the local councils to come up with a creative strategy to encourage consumers to use environment-friendly biodegradable bags when shopping at shopping complexes and wet markets.

"It's one of the ways to educate consumers to understand the need to protect the environment," he told Bernama here today when asked to comment on the Miri City Council's (MCC) initiative to organise the country's first "No Plastic Every Day" campaign beginning May 1.

He hoped that the public would be given full information on the dangers of using plastic bags so that the campaign would be more effective.

"It's all about education to the public. When they know the environmental dangers posed by these plastic bags, consumers will automatically prefer using biodegradable bags and refuse to use the plastic bags," he said.
